ABOUT ME

The best life advice I've ever heard consists of two words: Pay attention.

I didn't hear it until recently but, looking back, paying attention has been the basis of my creative life. The search for the telling detail fuelled my career as a newspaper feature writer in Ontario, Canada, and it drives my preoccupation with storytelling through still photography in Queensland, Australia, where I currently live.

Compelling photography, like great writing, is all about paying attention to a lot of things at once. The obvious ones are the subject, setting and lighting conditions. Less obvious are the internal forces, conscious or otherwise, that tell you when to release the shutter.

Why are you taking the picture? What are you trying to say?

Similar to the way I've been drawn to a wide range of topics as a writer, I take pictures for all manner of reasons. Sometimes it's to document something I feel is important. Other times it's to preserve a memory of a special person, place or moment. In some cases I'm trying to situate myself in the world and understand where I am. And other times it's a practical matter of earning a few dollars doing what I love to do.

This explains the breadth of subject matter and aesthetic approaches you'll find on this site. When you pay attention, you see a lot.

Whatever it is that brought you to my site, welcome. I'm glad you're here.
